Christmas comes to Crookwell!

Well where do I start? What a wonderful evening last night! Almost 80 members and guests celebrated another year of friendship with VIEW. The committee have been doing a lot of meeting and planning- and with our collective fingers crossed- the dinner turned out to be a huge success.
Two of our members, Sylvia and Jan have been otherwise engaged. Sylvia has been with her daughter welcoming a new arrival- congratulations Sylvia and family !! Jan has been in hospital after a fall, resulting in a broken femur and other complications. Jan is doing well now and although we missed these two stalwarts of the VIEW experience, we put on our 'L' plates and trainer wheels and did our very best!
With inspiration from Susan we decorated the tables with holly, silver flowers and red berries. Anne brought along her Christmas tree which lit up the stage so beautifully. Bev and myself had spent an evening working out the seating plan and this seemed to work well - looking at the animated conversations and smiling faces around the room. Christine and Ambar are a great team and they effortlessly balanced the books yet again! Justene -raffle ticket queen, Ieva who brought her extensive collection of Christmas CD's and helped Bev to get everyone to their table. Margaret must have walked miles around the room with the raffle draw and Patrice keeping us in the 'loop' with our newsletters and information- what a team!
to anyone reading this we wish you a wonderful Christmas and very best wishes for 2011. VIEW promotes friendship to all :)

Forum Luncheon 'It's All About Women'

What a wonderful and inspiring day! Ladies if you are yet to attend the Convention you will not be disappointed. Sylvia, Anne, Justene and Kath enjoyed listening to an amazing group of women. Name dropping just a few....Ita Buttrose....Senator Kate Lundy.... Bronwyn Bishop MP....and Pru Goward. ...
All gave their thoughts on how much things had changed for women during the past 50 years. George Forbes founded VIEW in 1960 and highlighted the importance of education and giving women a voice. Topics covered were equal pay, working in male dominated professions and balancing paid work with family commitments.
Karen Arthur may not be an name known to you however Karen was assisted by The Smith Family to become a lawyer. This young woman spoke about how the support given to her family assisted her to have hope, to aspire to a career and to achieve her dream.
A great day and there is much much more to come!

Unity plays at VIEW

August has been a cold and very wet month in Crookwell so it was wonderful to see so many members and their guests turn out. The band Unity are great entertainment and play a range of music. Keep an eye out for them as they also play at events around the Shire.
One of the members, Andrew is tourism officer for Upper Lachlan Shire Council and he gave a very interesting talk. Tourism in the Capital Country region is a 16 million dollar industry with 150,000 visitors each year.
Badges were presented to new members Nicki Spackman and Karen Crasnich -welcome ladies! Rhondda O'Connor was FOURTH time lucky with a badge showing her correct name. Sylvia Cullen, Inge Schulz and Patsy Miller received their 10 year badges- congratulations!
A speedy recovery to Bev Seaman who has recently had surgery.
A big thank you to Shirley Willis who collects beautiful bouquets for our birthdays. Shirley manages to find flowers in the middle of a Crookwell winter, bright colour to remind us that Spring is just around the corner.
The Convention in Canberra is fast approaching and Crookwell VIEW has representatives on all 3 days so well done everyone.
We have had a request for help for volunteer tutors. The Smith Family worker in Goulburn, Robyn is looking for help with the Indigenous Homework Centre and a Mentor Supervisor for the Student to Student program. Please contact any committee member for more information.
Until next time ..keep warm!

Jean Pennell National Councillor guest speaker at July dinner meeting

Jean Pennell's opening remark that she 'had never been to a club like this!' brought smiles and laughter to the room. Jean went on to describe Crookwell VIEW as having a feeling of excitement and friendship. President Sylvia in fact had to repeatedly ring her bell to bring the meeting to order. The conversations between old friends and new, between guests and members could be halted only briefly to attend to the agenda items!
Jean thanked Delegate Justene for doing a great job. The Delegate has a pivotal role in getting a lot of information to the local members.
Jean then presented badges to five new members and congratulated the Club on it's growing membership.
Finally Jean gave an overview of The Smith Family Learning for Life programs. There are too many to mention individually, however the support and assistance can start from before the child is born with parenting, to tertiary level with mentoring and personal development.
Sally Cullen thanked Jean for a most enjoyable and interesting talk.

June Dinner Meeting

Alison McIntosh was the guest speaker at our June dinner meeting. Alison is a dedicated member of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth. This organisation provides an opportunity for interaction between agriculturalists at a grass roots level. Alison has been involved with projects in Zambia and PNG as part of 'Understanding and Assistance Missions.'
This is a time for enthusiastic young agricultural minds to gain an insight into another culture while giving practical assistance and sharing knowledge.
The audience was captivated by a presentation showing pictures of life in rural areas where poor wages, limited education and diseases such as malaria and AIDS make life very difficult.
Alison took many questions from the floor and was thanked by Heather Davies for a most enjoyable and thought provoking talk.
